About Berkeley Heights
Berkeley Heights began as New Providence Township in 1809. The area became part of Union County when the county was formed in 1857; land was later separated to create Summit and the Borough of New Providence. The township adopted the name Berkeley Heights in 1951.
Today the township covers about 6.26 square miles in northwestern Union County, partly on the Second Watchung Mountain and partly in the Passaic River Valley. The Passaic River forms the northern edge, while the Green Brook helps define the eastern side near Watchung Reservation.

Columbia Middle School serves Grades 6–8. Governor Livingston High School serves Grades 9–12 and also receives Mountainside students.
Transit & commuting
Berkeley Heights has its own NJ TRANSIT station on the Gladstone Branch of the Morris & Essex Lines at Sherman and Plainfield avenues. Municipal commuter parking is permit-based during weekday commuter hours.
